# Where the visit takes place

Your location matters to remote care, and state rules do not all treat the same visit format alike.

This is a guide. Nobody is seen, prescribed for, or booked through these pages.

Move at your own pace. These steps organize questions, not treatment.

## Name the state where you will be

For a remote appointment, give the service the state where you expect to be sitting during the conversation. Do that before the booking is settled. If you will travel, ask about the actual location for that visit rather than only the address on your account. Keep the answer with the appointment details so it is easy to revisit.

September 2026 guidance places a telehealth medical encounter where the patient is located and calls for appropriate physician authority there. State law and medical-board rules set different standards for online prescribing, as documented in September 2026. There is no simple national answer that replaces checking the relevant state.

## A form can mean different things

Some visits begin with questions you answer before speaking with anyone. Ask whether that is preparation for an exchange or the whole assessment. Find out who can ask for more history and how you can respond. It helps to describe the process rather than argue over whether the service calls it a visit, an intake, or a consultation.

Idaho's rule, recorded in September 2026, says treatment based solely on a fixed online questionnaire lacks a legitimate medical purpose. In California as of September 2026, the examination before prescribing could use a health questionnaire or a tool where you answer questions about your own health. A live conversation was not always required, but the prescriber still had to meet the medical requirements for assessing and treating your particular concern. Ask who reviews your answers and what would call for more questions, tests, or an examination.

### Video and voice are not interchangeable labels

Ask what technology the service expects and what happens if it does not work. Tell them if you cannot use video. Ask the service to explain its process in words you can use. Ask whether a different format or an in-person appointment is needed for your circumstances.

West Virginia's September 2026 rules allow live audio-only calls to establish a physician-patient relationship while barring a text-only one. This is a particular state's example. It does not describe every state, every medicine, or every kind of assessment. Bring the question back to where you will be and what is being proposed.

## Ask about prescribing roles too

The nurse-practitioner rules checked on November 3, 2026 differed: Arizona allowed assessment and prescribing without doctor supervision, while California had several routes, including exceptions for qualified nurse practitioners. Those state examples also differed on the role of a doctor in a physician assistant's work. Some required a doctor to oversee it; others required an agreement about working with a doctor or an experienced physician assistant. Ask whether a doctor must review the prescribing decision for your visit. A service's answer about a physician may not answer the question for a different professional role.

Ask who makes the decision for this visit and which licensing authority can confirm their role. If a service changes the person assigned to you, ask whether the answer still holds. You are checking an arrangement, not collecting a general statement that a company offers care nationwide.

### Plan for the next conversation

Location can come up again if you travel between visits. Ask the service how to handle that before you need a follow-up. Keep the method for reaching them in the same note as the appointment details. If they cannot explain the arrangement, leave the question open rather than treating silence as confirmation.

The point is not to learn every state's rules. It is to ask a clear question about the visit you are arranging. Continue to [online or in-person assessment](/visit-route)
to compare the experience, the chance to ask questions, and the route to further care when a screen is not enough.
